ROLE OF
CITY
COMMISSIONERS BOARD
The Board
consists of five Commissioners, who are
elected at large. The members serve in four-year,
staggered terms. At the first regular meeting after each
biennial election, the Board elects one of their number to
serve a two-year term as Mayor and to preside over the Board
meetings. The Commissioners, at that same time, appoints
one member to serve as Vice-Mayor.
The Board of Commissioners
is the legislative body of the city and supplies the vision
for future development and growth. The Board approves and
enacts all rezoning and annexation of property within the
city.
Some examples of the
Board of Commissioner’s authority and regular duties include:
-
Assess, levy, and collect taxes.
-
Make special assessments for local
improvements.
-
Enter into contracts.
-
Incur debts by borrowing money, issue or sell
interest-bearing bonds or notes.
-
Expend money for lawful purposes.
-
Buy, sell, or lease property.
-
Condemn property.
-
Build and maintain public streets.
-
Enforce any ordinance, rule, or regulation by
fines, forfeitures, and penalties in any court of competent
jurisdiction.
