The City of Fairview, Tennessee, has an immediate opening for the following position:
POLICE OFFICER
SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the assigned chain of command personnel a police officer is responsible for protection of the life and property of the citizens of the city of Fairview. Police officers are frequently required to use independent judgement in order to perform the duties of this position. Police officers are expected to perform their law enforcement duties in a manner that is legally consistent with mandates of the United States Constitution, Tennessee law, city of Fairview ordinances, and the policies and procedures of the city of Fairview and the Fairview police department.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates for consideration for this position must possess a high school diploma. Applicants who possess a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university are preferred. Candidates must possess valid Tennessee driver’s license and be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of application. Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications to be eligible for certification by the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. Current certification by the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission is preferred but not required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensure the civil treatment and the observance of all legal rights of all persons who may come in contact with any member of the Fairview police department.
Become familiar with and apply modern municipal law enforcement procedure.
Professionally exercise his/her authority consistent with mandates of the oath of office
Adhere to all provisions of the city of Fairview’s police Policy and Procedure Manual and city of Fairview personnel handbook.
Promptly obey all legitimate orders.
Communicate to his/her commanding officer or supervisor and co-workers all information obtained which is pertinent to the achievement of common objectives of the Fairview police department.
Conduct him/herself in accordance with ethical standards of conduct of the city of Fairview and the Fairview police department, both “on” and “off” duty.
Patrol city streets, residential areas, parking lots, parks, commercial areas and other areas of the city enforcing city ordinances and state laws.
Investigate suspected crimes, recognize and recover evidence, file reports, and make arrests.
Investigate traffic accidents.
Respond to dispatched calls for service and/or assistance.
Testify in local, state and federal court as required.
Prepare reports and records such as daily activity sheet, accident reports, offense reports, traffic citations, and other written reports.
Direct traffic, provide crowd control, and suppress or disperse disorderly gatherings.
Participate in training programs as assigned or required.
Perform related work as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Must be able to operate a variety of automated office equipment including computer, printer, copy and facsimile machines, telephone, and law enforcement equipment such as handcuffs, flashlight, pepper gas or spray, firearms, taser, baton, cameras, video equipment, recording devices, binoculars, tape measure, hand tools, electronic surveillance equipment, two-way radio, and motor vehicle.
Requires the ability to understand, convey and/or exchange legal, law enforcement, radio communication, and court related information, including giving/receiving assignments and/or directions to/from subordinates, staff, supervisor(s), and the ability to communicate with various agencies, court personnel, attorneys, elected officials, and the general public.
Requires the ability in verbal and written form job related documentation and reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Requires the ability to make independent judgments in absence of supervision.
Requires the ability to record and deliver information, such as in a public speaking situation, to explain procedures, and to follow verbal and written instructions.
Requires the ability to discern color.
Requires the ability to hear and perceive nature of sounds by ear.
Must be able to adapt to and perform under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency.
