The City of Fairview, Tennessee, is hiring for the following position:
FIREFIGHTER
SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the shift officer or assigned chain of command, combats, extinguishes, and prevents fires and fire related hazards. Protects life and property through firefighting and emergency response activities such as medical response calls, motor vehicle accidents, and various other first responder calls for service.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A high school diploma is required. Candidates must be 18 years or older at the time of application. Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony crime, or misdemeanor involving theft or moral turpitude. Must pass a physical examination and drug screen prescribed by the city prior to employment. Possession of a valid Tennessee driver’s license is required. State of Tennessee Firefighter 1 certification, or Firefighter 1 IFSAC or ProBoard certification and Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) is required but individuals with Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification will be given preference.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform Basic Life Support (B.L.S.) activities.
Perform firefighting activities including fire suppression and property salvage operations.
Receive and relay fire and EMS calls and alarms.
Operate radio and other communication equipment.
Operate firefighting and fire truck equipment to include nozzles, hoses, self-contained breathing apparatus, power saws, generators, and similar equipment.
Participate in supervised training exercises.
Perform basic duties of the job in extreme weather conditions while exposed to extremely hazardous conditions and materials, extreme heat, smoke, hazardous chemicals, and falling materials.
Respond to fire alarms.
Force entry of premises for firefighting, rescue, and salvage operations.
Use chemical fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines, and other equipment.
Remove persons from danger and administer first-aid to injured persons.
Position and climb ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings.
Carry and employ charged hose lines for fire extinguishment.
Participate in fire drills and attend training classes in firefighting, first-aid, and related subjects.
Perform hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may involve extreme exertion under hazardous conditions.
Perform extremely strenuous and physical labor for extended periods in unfavorable climatic and physical conditions.
Perform duties requiring bending, crouching, stooping, climbing, and crawling in buildings or close quarters that may be filled with smoke.
Repeatedly lift and move weighted objects.
Perform general maintenance work for the upkeep of fire department property.
Perform basic lawn care duties.
Maintain fire station living quarters.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Must be able to operate a variety of automated office equipment including computer, printer, copy and facsimile machines, telephone, and fire rescue equipment such as flashlight, cameras, binoculars, tape measure, hand tools, two-way radio, motor vehicle, B.L.S. equipment and extrication equipment.
Requires the ability to understand, convey and/or exchange fire rescue and incident scene radio communication, giving/receiving assignments and/or directions to/from subordinates, staff, supervisor(s), and the ability to communicate with various agencies, public safety personnel, elected officials, and the general public.
Requires the ability in verbal and written form job related documentation and reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Requires the ability to make independent judgments in absence of supervision.
Requires the ability to record and deliver information, such as in a public speaking situation, to explain procedures, and to follow verbal and written instructions.
Requires the ability to discern color.
Requires the ability to hear and perceive sounds by ear.
Must be able to adapt to and perform under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency.
