JOB DESCRIPTION 

PARKS RECEPTIONIST/NATURALIST 

SUMMARY

The Parks Receptionist and Naturalist assists the Parks Program Coordinator with development, presentation, and evaluation of educational programs within the City of Fairview’s Park System. In addition, the Parks Receptionist and Naturalist will perform various administrative and clerical tasks including but not limited to: making and receiving telephone calls, sending and receiving emails, and greeting park guests. The position reports to the Parks Program Coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural science, elementary education, interpretation, or related field is required. Must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in education or interpretation with the ability to create innovative lesson plans for a variety of age groups. Thorough knowledge of plants, wildlife, and natural history is desired.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Aids in recruiting program participants, volunteers, and program leaders (counselors, educators, etc.).
  • Assisting in developing and maintaining the framework for park programs. Aids in evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the framework and implementing improvement strategies.
  • Assisting Naturalist with duties related to animal husbandry, feeding, and housekeeping.
  • Communication via telephone and email, fielding questions from the public, and greeting park visitors in a manner that exhibits good judgement, tact, and courtesy.
  • Ensuring that program activities comply with all relevant educational and professional standards.
  • Leading educational programs and camps for a variety of ages, backgrounds, and needs.
  • Maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Maintaining inventory of program equipment and supplies.
  • Manages program registration logs and shelter reservations.
  • May collect, receipt, and account for program revenues and distribute to the finance department.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be able to operate a variety of automated office equipment including computers, printers, copiers and facsimile machines, telephones, and cell phones.
  • Must be able to safely lift 25 pounds without assistance.
  • Must have full range of physical motion.
  • Requires the ability to prepare documents and reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
  • Requires the ability to record and deliver information, such as in a public speaking situation, to explain procedures and educational material.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • May be required to use a variety of hand tools and maintenance equipment.
  • The position is exposed to all types of weather conditions.
  • May be exposed to poison ivy and biting or stinging insects.
  • The ideal applicant will be able to establish rapport with people of a wide variety of ages and backgrounds. This person will exhibit enthusiasm, creative thinking, and be able to foster a sense of wonder and responsibility for nature and its creatures.
  • The applicant will have the opportunity to become a Certified Naturalist through the Tennessee Naturalist Program. Program registration, lodging, and travel fees are to be paid for at the City of Fairview’s expense. The rigorous program requires a minimum of forty volunteer hours to become certified and may take several months to complete depending on the chapter.
